A bright fireball was observed over New Zealand’s North Island at 09:31 UTC (22:31 NZDT) on November 17, 2025, captured by multiple Fireballs Aotearoa cameras, including the color camera at Tauranga Astronomical Society in Matua and station NZ0033 in Katikati.

Very bright fireball over New Zealand produces house-shaking sonic booms

A large fireball entered Earth's atmosphere over the Otago area, South Island, New Zealand around 10:00 UTC (23:00 LT) on January 31, 2025, producing loud, house-shaking sonic booms. There is a possibility pieces of the object survived and ended up somewhere in the Eyre Mountains.

Public meteorite hunt after large fireball streaks over New Zealand

A very bright fireball was seen over Otago and Canterbury, New Zealand at 08:04 UTC (21:04 LT) on March 13, 2024. Analysis shows that some 0.5 km (1.1 pounds) of the object survived the entry and ended up scattered on the ground in MacKenzie Country. A public search for meteorites is scheduled for March 21.
