A newly-discovered asteroid designated 2025 TF made an extremely close approach to Earth at 00:49 UTC on October 1, 2025, reaching a nominal distance of 0.02 LD (0.00005 AU / 6 790 km / 4 220 miles) from Earth’s center -- equivalent to about 419 km (260 miles) above the surface over Antarctica. At this distance, it is now classified as the second-closest asteroid flyby ever recorded.

A bright daylight fireball was recorded at 17:49 UTC (14:49 LT) on September 9, 2025, over the Atlantic Ocean, off the northeastern coast of Brazil. NASA’s CNEOS data show the object released 0.44 kilotons of impact energy at an altitude of 24 km (15 miles). IMO and AMS received 10 reports from Ceará, with witnesses describing orange to blue colors, persistent trails, fragmentation, and sounds ranging from faint hissing to thunder-like booms.

Schools in Santorini, Ios, Anafi, and Amorgos will remain closed at least until February 21, 2025, as the Greek government prepares for another meeting to assess seismic risks in the Aegean Sea near Santorini. Over 1 300 earthquakes were recorded with a magnitude above 3.0 in the sea area near Anydros since the beginning of the month, with the strongest reaching M5.3. The government also announced plans to build an emergency escape port in Santorini in addition to the new port under development.

Ios became the fourth island in the Aegean to be placed under a state of emergency on February 15, following the trend set by Santorini on February 6, Amorgos on February 12, and Anafi on February 13, due to the ongoing seismic activity in the region since late January 2025. On January 18, two M5.1 quakes were registered between Santorini and Amorgos, shaking the area with enough intensity to be felt across multiple islands.

Fragments of asteroid 2024 BX1 identified as extremely rare Aubrite meteorites

Initial investigations of meteorites from the strewn field of asteroid 2024 BX1, which entered the Earth's atmosphere on January 21, 2024, near Ribbeck, northwest of Berlin, have identified them as rare aubrite achondrites. The findings were submitted to the Meteoritical Society's Nomenclature Committee on February 2, 2024, for official examination.
