A major earthquake registered by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) and USGS as M7.6 struck off the east coast of Aomori Prefecture, Japan, at 14:15 UTC (23:15 JST) on December 8, 2025. Both agencies are reporting a depth of 50 km (31 miles). According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC), hazardous tsunami waves are possible within 1 000 km (620 miles) of the epicenter.

Major M7.4 earthquake hits Mindanao, Philippines, leaving at least 9 dead and hundreds injured

A strong earthquake registered by the USGS as M7.4 struck off the east coast of Mindanao, Philippines, at 01:43 UTC (09:43 local time) on October 10, 2025. The agency is reporting a depth of 58.1 km (36 miles). EMSC is reporting M7.4 at a depth of 53 km (33 miles). According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC), hazardous tsunami waves were initially possible within 300 km (186 miles) of the epicenter, but the threat has since passed.

Asteroid 2025 TF flew just 420 km (260 miles) above Antarctica, second-closest flyby on record

A newly-discovered asteroid designated 2025 TF made an extremely close approach to Earth at 00:49 UTC on October 1, 2025, reaching a nominal distance of 0.02 LD (0.00005 AU / 6 790 km / 4 220 miles) from Earth’s center -- equivalent to about 419 km (260 miles) above the surface over Antarctica. At this distance, it is now classified as the second-closest asteroid flyby ever recorded.

The agency is reporting a depth of 5 km (3.1 miles). USGS and EMSC are reporting M5.7 at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). The quake was preceded by M4.6 and followed by M3.6, M3.1, M3.5, M4.3, M3.9 and M3.0 by 14:00 UTC.
